Syllable Posters | Handouts

Why teach about syllables? Dividing words into parts, or “chunks” helps speed the process of decoding. Knowing the rules for syllable division can students read words more accurately and fluently. Understanding syllables can also help students learn to spell words correctly. This resource will help your students learn to divide words into syllables!

  1. Syllable Patterns – This poster will help understand the difference between ‘closed’ and ‘open’ syllables, syllables with a ‘silent e’, syllables with a ‘vowel team’, syllables with a ‘bossy r’, and syllables with a ‘consonant + le’.
  2. Breaking Words into Syllables – This poster will take students through 6 steps of ‘what to look for’ when trying to break words into syllables. They include: looking for an ending / suffix ; looking for a prefix ; looking for a compound word ; looking for double or 2 consonants ; looking for chunks ; using what they know about syllable patterns (1st poster)

I’ve included each poster in both COLOR and B/W. You may use the B/W version for student handouts! Students will like having a quick reference at their desks or to take home to help them as they work.
