Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish celebration commemorating the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts.

- A beast like a lion with eagle’s wings. [v. 4]
- A beast like a bear, raised up on one side, with three ribs between its teeth. [v. 5]
- A beast like a leopard with four wings of fowl and four heads. [v. 6]
- A fourth beast, with large iron teeth and ten horns. [v. 7-8]
This is explained as a fourth kingdom, different from all the other kingdoms; it “will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it”. [v.23] The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom .[v.24] A further horn (the “little horn”) then appears and uproots three of the previous horns: this is explained as a future king.

Chapter 8 in the book of Daniel tells of Daniel’s vision of a two-horned ram destroyed by a one-horned goat (a possible allegory for the transition from the Persian to the Greek eras in the Near East), followed by the history of the “little horn”, which is Daniel’s code-word for the Greek king Antiochus Epiphanes.
