With this comprehensive, cross-curricular unit study on the Mayflower, your students are going to read informational text to learn about the ship, its voyages, and its passengers (the Pilgrims). Students will also work with vocabulary related to ship navigational instruments, sections of the ship as well as words used in a farewell letter written to the passengers of the Mayflower. Perfect to use when studying the founding of the New World or during November (prior to Thanksgiving).

About the book: In January 1776, Thomas Paine published a document that sparked the American fight for independence from England. Students will use this project-based unit to learn about and report on Thurgood Marshall. Thurgood Marshall (son of a slave) was a lawyer, civil rights activist, and associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1967–91), the first African American member of the Supreme Court. As an attorney, he successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court the case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954), which declared unconstitutional racial segregation in American public schools.
✏️This notebooking project unit can be assigned individually or within cooperative groups. Use it within a Language Arts classroom or a Social Studies / U.S. History classroom. Very flexible and cross-curricular!
