Thurgood Marshall (son of a slave) was a lawyer, civil rights activist, and associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1967–91), the first African American member of the Supreme Court. Board of Education of Topeka (1954), which declared unconstitutional racial segregation in American public schools.
