Sojourner Truth was an African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist. Truth was born into slavery but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son in 1828, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man.

Thurgood Marshall (son of a slave) was a lawyer, civil rights activist, and associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1967–91), the first African American member of the Supreme Court. As an attorney, he successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court the case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954), which declared unconstitutional racial segregation in American public schools.

This notebooking rubric should have the ‘points possible’ listed when the assignment is given and any other details you expect. Give this information to the students at the beginning of the assignment and then complete the rubric after the assignment is complete.
